Louis Berkman founded Village Coffee Roaster in 1991 with the then radical idea of providing the world’s finest coffees freshly and carefully roasted with respect to each coffees individual character. Louis developed this idea because of his deep appreciation for excellent coffee that was largely unavailable at the time. As with many things in life, he found the only way to achieve this was to do it himself.

With his background in the restaurant business, Louis was able to put together the resources necessary to produce this largely unavailable product. Finding the very finest coffees in the world, the best roasting equipment and more than a little good luck enabled Louis to create the “Village Coffee Roaster” roast, a slow roast that enhances the inherent excellence of each coffee and is also different for each coffee. Variety specific roasting is what makes our coffee so special.

Our coffee is never harsh or bitter. Our regular roasts do not have the “smoky” over-roasted quality that so many other roasters produce with their “one roast fits all” roasting style. Our dark roasts have clean, satisfying, intense flavors without a burned aftertaste. Our blends are unique in that coffees are blended after roasting so that individual bean characteristics are allowed to develop and complement each other. This is especially true for our justly famous House Espresso, perhaps our most acclaimed coffee.

In addition to our roasting expertise, we have another equally important aspect to our company. This is our staff, expertly headed by Dusty Troyan, business manager. Dusty has also developed great coffee expertise, helping to develop blends and identify exceptional green coffee. No matter what others may claim, producing consistently outstanding coffee is not a one person job.
